Emily sees every moment as it is, and every moment as it could be
(a/n: set mid-s4, in and around the pool incident. written for [profile] lesaut's queerly awesome comment comment ficathon)

All moments all the time, that’s what Emily sees. She sees her past passing alongside her present and her future. She sees every moment as it is, and every moment as it could be.

She’s about to storm out, again, and looks Naomi straight in the eye. She sees Naomi grab her wrist as she turns away, hears that precious word (stop) and can feel the words unsaid (I love you).

But then she doesn’t see it anymore, and Naomi is just standing there, utterly defeated. Naomi sighs, almost to herself, and says, ‘Well, go on then, leave.’

Emily does storm out then, but sees Naomi pretending not to notice the tears leaking out of her eyes.

She doesn’t understand it, not anymore. She doesn’t understand why she and Naomi continue to circle each other, continue to survey each other from opposite ends of rooms, as though sizing each other up. Why they throw backhanded insults at each other, why they both get progressively drunker each night, why they both vow to themselves that tomorrow they will fix it, but never do. Tomorrow. Never today. Never now. The future is undetermined, and for the minute, that’s how it stays.

She sees all the possibilities; all the time.

She sees all the failures, all the fights, all the betrayal, regret and pain. She sees the hundreds of thousands of ways that it could all fall apart. But she also sees the good. She sees, over and over, Naomi apologising, the various forms of ‘I love you’s that could be spoken, and that gives her hope. For, despite the million and one ways it will never happen, it could, and she believes in them enough that it will.

It wouldn’t take much. An apology on either side, then an acceptance of the past, and then moving on into the future. But Naomi’s too scared, and Emily’s too tired.

She’s been fighting too hard, for too long- and now it’s Naomi’s turn. But it seems she doesn’t want to the play. It’s always been Emily. Emily going to pick up the pieces, grab them like dolls and smash them together in the hope that they’ll stay. And they do, and did, and will do.

She hopes.
